Why we built it, how we research it, and why we have no financial relationship with any locksmith company.
Locksmith Cheap is an independent consumer information resource covering locksmith pricing, quality standards, and licensing requirements across the US. We do not dispatch locksmiths, receive referral fees, or have a commercial relationship with any locksmith company or directory.
Pricing in the locksmith industry varies widely based on service type, location, and provider. This means doing a bit of research before you call can make a real difference in the outcome. Consumer organizations and state agencies have documented pricing patterns across the industry, from very low quotes that do not reflect the actual cost to inferior hardware sold as premium. At the same time, millions of legitimate locksmith service calls happen every year with no issues.
This guide exists to give you the pricing context and specific criteria to evaluate any locksmith before they arrive — price benchmarks, hardware grades, and licensing verification.
Our price data comes from three sources: aggregated consumer-reported prices from major review platforms (where users report what they paid), published data from locksmith industry associations, and direct comparison of service rates in major metro areas. We update price data twice yearly — January and June — and flag significant regional variations.
We do not receive pricing data from locksmith companies. Accepting data from service providers would introduce bias toward the rates they want consumers to see. All price benchmarks on this site are consumer-perspective data.
Lock grade information comes directly from ANSI/BHMA standards documents. Licensing requirements are sourced from official state government licensing board websites. We link to primary sources wherever possible so you can verify the information directly.
This site does not currently display advertising from locksmith companies, receive referral fees for service bookings, or participate in any locksmith directory network. The guide exists as a consumer education resource. If you have a specific pricing situation or question, use the contact form — we are happy to provide research-based guidance.
